2007/10/31: Book vernissage of Hanna Zweig’s biography of Saly Mayer in the Archives of Contemporary History
The latest book by Hanna Zweig "Saly Mayer (1882-1950). Ein Retter jüdischen Lebens während des Holocaust" published by Böhlau-Verlag (Köln / Weimar / Wien) in 2007 contains a comprehensive study of the multi layer life of Saly Mayer. As president of the Swiss federation of Jewish Communities (SIG) he was highly controversial. As deputy of the JOINT, he earned international accreditation for helping haunted Jews in Middle and Eastern Europe (see: german article in ETH life). Prof. Dr. Beatrix Mesmer, eremitus Professor of Swiss and general modern history in Berne, as well as Prof. Dr. Jacques Picard, head of the Institute of Jewish Studies at the University of Basle, spoke on the development of scientific works on his biography and the scientific significance of biographies in general, whereas Hanna Zweig herself described her own prejudices and astonishments which accompanied her research.

2007/09/01: New director for the Archives of Contemporary History
After forty years of groundwork, the founder and director of the Archives of Contemporary History Prof. Dr. Klaus Urner retires and hands over the leadership to his successor Dr. Gregor Spuhler (see: Press Release of the ETH Zurich in German)

2007/06/27: Colloquium with Dr. iur. Robert F. Lamberg
Born to an assimilated Czech Jewish family in 1929, Dr. iur. Robert F. Lamberg survived the Holocaust in clerical-fascist Slovakia under most difficult conditions. After World War II he was again discriminated living in Prague under communism of Stalinistic character. 1957, he succeeded to take refuge in Western Europe. Later in life, he worked for the NZZ and became known as foreign correspondent and expert for economic subjects and Latin America. His retrospection and the following discussion impressively add to his book "Bootspartie am Acheron. Ein Leben zwischen braunem und rotem Totalitarismus", which was published by NZZ Publishers House in 2006.

2007/05/30: Colloquium with Dr. iur. Dietrich Bührle
Dr. iur. Dietrich Bührle took over his father’s armament factory "Oerlikon-Bührle" in 1956. Until his retirement in 1990, he transformed the factory into a multi-branch holding company. During the Colloquium he looked back at his life between 1924 and 1990 and touched upon several controversial subjects. He pointed out the much greater usage of the company’s arms during World War II by the Western Allies in comparison to the axial powers. He also spoke about the illegal arms deals with the apartheid regime in South Africa which was sanctioned by the UN at the time. Concluding his speech, he identified the ADAT-System as the miscalculation which considerably caused the decline of the Oerlikon-Bührle-Holding.

2007/05/09: Project of the Swiss National Science Foundation concerning Jewish Contemporary History
The project "Religious change and socio-political orientations of the Jews in Switzerland", run by the deputy head of the Documentation Centre Jewish Contemporary History Dr. Daniel Gerson, is admitted to the Swiss National Research Program (NRP 58) "Religious Communities, State and Society". Subject of research are the recent religious, social and political developments among the Jews in Switzerland. To this context belong changes within Jewish communities and institutions, new forms of constructing identity, Jewish initiatives, movements and religious communities, as well as changes in the relations between the Jewish minority and society. Responsible for the project is Dr. Daniel Gerson, together with Professor Dr. Jaques Picard from the Institute for Jewish Studies of the University in Basel, who will be the chairman of the advisory committee. Scientific partners of the Institute for Jewish Studies are the Archives of Contemporary History of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich and the Jewish Policy Research Institute in London. Apart from the Swiss National Science Foundation, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich’s Foundation for Jewish Contemporary History and the René and Susanne Braginsky Foundation have agreed on financial support.

2007/03/28: Colloquium with Dr. iur. Peter Veleff
Dr. iur. Peter Veleff is known as the author of the book “Spionageziel Schweiz? Die Geheimdienste der DDR und deren Aktivitäten in der Schweiz” (published by Orell Füssli, Zurich 2006). As officer, examining magistrate and General Secretary at the Military department of the canton Zurich, he experienced the effects of the Cold War period first hand. After 1990 he tried to determine whether Switzerland was indeed threatened by the Warsaw Pact. The presentation of his own research results, which contradict earlier presumptions, and his retellings of conversations with famous representatives of the former NVA (Nationale Volksarmee of the GDR) and the MfS (Ministerium für Sicherheit/Ministry for national Security) initiated a lively discussion, moderated by PD Dr. Hans Rudolf Fuhrer.

2007/01/26: Holocaust Memorial Day – classes of local grammar schools visit the Archives of Contemporary History
Five 12th grade classes from the local grammar schools Rämibühl and Hohe Promenade (Zurich), Romanshorn and Rychenberg (Winterthur) visited the Documentation Centre Jewish Contemporary History at the Archives of Contemporary History on the occasion of the Holocaust Memorial Day. Survivors of the Shoah reported on their painful experiences under persecution during the Holocaust. Following their presentation, they responded to questions by students about their personal fate and the question of why and how this genocide could have happened...a question which remains incomprehensible, even for witnesses of that time.

2006/12/13: Colloquium with Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. Jean-François Bergier
Professor Jean-François Bergier reported about his career as historian. Starting point of his academic career happened to be a stay in Paris where he learned the historic craft at "Ecole nationale des chartes" and received significant scientific stimuli studying with Fernand Braudel at "Collège de France". In 1963, he was appointed Professor at the University of Geneva and in 1969 at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. As president of the Independent Commission of Experts Switzerland – Second World War (ICE) he, the mediaevalist, was confronted with highly controversial political issues of contemporary history.

2006/11/15: "Fleck on-line" - historical sources on Ludwik Fleck
In its virtual information room AfZ Online Archives the Archives of Contemporary History publish research documentations and materials related to the microbiologist, physician and science theoretician Ludwik Fleck (1896-1961) in cooperation with the Ludwik Fleck Center at the Collegium Helveticum. The digital copies of the original documents are - apart from a 30-years-retention period and published texts - freely consultable. For reproductions in print quality please refer to the information service of the Archives of Contemporary History.

2006/11/09 : Vernissage in the Archives of Contemporary History of the book "Der Blutruf" by Zsolt Keller
Vernissage in the Archives of Contemporary History of the book "Der Blutruf (Mt 27.25). Eine Schweizer Wirkungsgeschichte 1900-1950", written by Zsolt Keller, published at Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, Goettingen 2006 . The study examines the historical impact and the fatal consequences of the New Testaments verse "Let his blood be on us and on our children!" in the context of anti-Semitic discourse in Switzerland also by referring to historical sources in the AfZ. Prof. Klaus Urner, director of the Archives of Contemporary History, Prof Dr. Jacques Picard, director of the Institute for Jewish studies at the University of Basel and Professor Dr. Max Küchler, dean of the theological faculty at the University of Freiburg in Ue., introduced to the topic.

2006/09/20: Homage to Lajser Ajchenrand
The vernissage of the publication of the poetry book "Aus der Tiefe" (Egon Ammann Verlag, Zurich 2006) written by Lajser Ajchenrand (1911-1985) in the Archives of Contemporary History was also a homage to this important Yiddish poet who survived the Holocaust under difficult conditions by escaping to Switzerland. After the biographic overview of Dr. Uriel Gast the publisher Egon Ammann paid homage to Ajchenrand recalling his own personal memories. The poems read in Yiddish language by Claire Ajchenrand and in German translation by Egon Ammann referred to the Shoa.

2006/08/16: Donation of the private collection Hans Hutter
Hans Hutter has donated his private papers to the Archives of Contemporary History. The 93-year-old veteran was one of several hundred Swiss citizens who fought in the Spanish Civil War for the Republican Army.

2006/06/22: A house for Contemporary History
Thanks to the generous donation of two Million Swiss Francs by the René and Susanne Braginsky Foundation in Zurich and thanks to the considerable contribution of 700'000 Swiss Francs by the Foundation Jewish Contemporary History at the ETH Zurich on the occasion of the 150-years anniversary of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich the new Foundation Archives for Contemporary History was established on February 9, 2006. It acquired the Archives' main building (Hirschengraben 62) on April 4, 2006 with the careful aim to preserve a long-term basis for the activities of the Archives of Contemporary History and its Documentation Centers in close neighborhood of the universities. At the reception on June 22 2006 to which all sponsors for the Archives of Contemporary History were invited, the President of the ETHZ Professor Hafen expressed his appreciation for their outstanding support for the preservation and accessibility of historical cultural assets (see also the report in ETH Life).

2006/05/10: Colloquium with former Swiss Secretary of State Professor Dr. Franz A. Blankart
The third and last part was dedicated to the labourious years as director of the Federal Office for Foreign Trade (1986-1998) as well as chief negotiator for the accession of Switzerland to the European Economic Area (EEA). The negotiations on foreign policy were seriously impaired by divergences relating to domestic affairs and by weaknesses of the leadership by the Federal Council. After the failed attempt to join the EEA the bilateralism returned. On the other hand the negotiations of the Uruguay Round were successful and led to the establishment of the World Trade Organization.

2006/03/17-19: Annual convention of the Society for Exile Research
The Society for Exile Research under the presidency of Professor Dr. Wolfgang Benz (Technische Universität Berlin) accomplished its annual convention in co-operation with the Archives of Contemporary History at the ETH Zurich. As part of the main subject "European policy on foreigners during the twentieth Century" lectures were given on the subject of the development of Switzerland's asylum policy during and after the First World War, the Second World War as well as since 1945 up to the present. By the inclusion of further countries continuities and changes in treating refugees during the twentieth Century were uncovered (see also the report in ETH Life).

2006/02/23: Presentation of AfZ Online Archives at .hist2006 in Berlin
At the conference of the co-operation group Clio online with the title ".hist2006. History in the net - practice, chances, visions" (http://www.clio-online.de/hist2006) the Archives of Contemporary History presented a workshop report on its virtual reading room (http://onlinearchives.ethz.ch) as an example for the presentation and retrieval of archival material in the Internet. At a stand in the Humboldt University in Berlin the technological features of the information retrieval engine developed by xylix.software were demonstrated to a specialized public audience including historians, computer scientists and representatives of German archives and libraries.

2006/01/27: AfZ Online Archives at the 1. Swiss Innovation Forum
The Archives of Contemporary History opened its virtual reading room which is based on innovative retrieval technology (http://onlinearchives.ethz.ch) and presented it under the title "Discovery of a Century of Swiss Contemporary History" at the 1. Swiss Innovation Forum in Baden (http://www.ch-innovation.ch). AfZ Online Archives supports archival research independent of time and place down to the level of files and selected digitized textdocuments and media assets. Search hits are listed corresponding to their relevance. By mouse-click they can be identified in the hierarchical context of the associated holdings. The hit synchronisation with the archival tectonics, which can be scrolled through directly, allows efficient combined research for the visitors of the AfZ and offers an immediate and reliable orientation in the data flow. 2006/01/27: Students meet survivors of the Holocaust / Shoa in the AfZ
On the official memorial day of the Holocaust High School students from Romanshorn, Rychenberg (Winterthur), Hohe Promenade und Rämibühl (Zurich) visited the Documentation Centre Jewish Contemporary History in the AfZ, where they had impressive encounters with survivors of the Shoah. This years memorial day of the Holocaust was concluded with a panel discussion under the title "The Shoah as topic in the school: presentation with cinematic means", in which also the film project "Shoah survivors in Switzerland narrate" by Gabrielle Antosiewicz was introduced. 2005/12/14: Colloquium with former Swiss Secretary of State Professor Dr. Franz A. Blankart
The second part of his review mainly was dedicated to the Swiss external trade politics from 1980 to 1986. As an authorized Ambassador he represented Switzerland within the institutions of EFTA, the GATT and UNCTAD in Geneva. Appointed 1984 to official delegatee for trade agreements, he was - among other issues - concerned with Swiss trade relations to North- and Latin America as well as to South Africa.

2005/11/09: Colloquium with Professor Dr. Dr. h. c mult. Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich
Professor Dr. Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich started with his youth in Berlin, which was characterised since 1933 by the increasing antisemitic terror of the Nazi regime. He impressively described his survival in Germany's underground at that time and his escape to Switzerland 1943. During the fifties he got involved as a lecturer with the new establishment of Jewish Studies also at German universities. The following discussion dwelled on his activity as a director of B'nai B'rith in Continental Europe and as a secretary-general of the Group for Christian-Jewish Cooperation (Christlich - Jüdische Arbeitsgemeinschaft, CJA).

2005/07/06: René Braginsky new president of the Foundation Jewish Contemporary History
For ten years Dr. Rolf Bloch led the "Foundation Jewish Contemporary History at the ETH Zurich for the preservation and communication of historical sources in Switzerland". At the meeting of the foundation council on July 6th 2005 he assigned the presidency to René Braginsky, with whom the Swiss Archives for Contemporary History is looking forward to tackle the future challenges on the base of state-of-art solutions for archiving and information technology (see also the extended version).

2005/06/22: Colloquium with former Swiss Secretary of State Prof. Dr. Franz A. Blankart
"Origins and imprint " - thus the first part of the review of Prof. Blankart can be summarized. The referee went into his youth years in Basel, with his parents' cosmopolitan home and into the promotion of his gifts and particularly his passion for classical ballet. After he had entered Switzerland's Departement of Foreign Affairs he became secretary of the federal councillors Spühler and Graber. In Brussels he witnessed the negatiations for the free trade agreement of 1972 with the EEC, whereby he appreciated the outstanding performance of Paul Jolles.

2005/04/06: ETHistory 1855-2005: 150 years of ETH history on-line
Since April 6th 2005 the history of the ETH can be experienced on the website ETHistory 1855-2005. The site has been compiled by the Chair for Technology History under the direction of Prof. Dr. David Gugerli. In four virtual areas it offers numerous reviews, extensive statistic material, historical key documents and interviews with time witnesses. Five historical tours invite you to explore the development of the interior and external relations of the ETH in detail.

2005/03/09: Colloquium Dr. iur. Rudolf Zipkes
In his review Dr. Zipkes (born 1911) fist looked back on his youth years as a high school student in Berlin during the twenties as well as on his academic years in Zurich at the beginning of the thirties. The colloquium furthermore treated the formation and reception of his book "Jewish self criticism" (jüdische Selbstkritik). The referee reflected critically on his at that time very disputed theses which demanded - among other issues - the abolition of the equal rights of the Jews.

2005/01/27: High school students meet survivors of the Shoa in the AfZ
Remembering the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp on January 27th 1945 students of the four high schools (Buelach, Wetzikon, Raemibuehl and Hohe Promenade Zurich) visited the Documentation Center for Jewish Contemporary History and met with survivors of the Shoah. The impressive encounters were also reported by newspapers and television (see also ETH Life).

2004/12/08: Colloquium with former Federal Councillor (Bundesrat) Dr. Otto Stich
The second part of the review of Federal Councillor Stich - moderated by Prof. Dr. Georg Kreis - was first dedicated to the financial foreign policy of Switzerland. This policy was crowned with the entry of Switzerland in the International Monetary Fund and in the World Bank accepted by Swiss voters in May 1992. Taking also a seat in the Executive Council required an intensive travel diplomacy of Federal Councillor Stich. The two presidential years 1988 and 1994 also included international contacts. Among other issues the resignation of Federal Councillor Kopp 1988/89 was adressed during the discussion.

2004/10/20: Colloquium with National Councillor (Nationalrat) Ernst Mühlemann
After his formative steps in the Swiss Army and as director of the UBS training centre Wolfsberg the member of National Council (Nationalrat, 1983-1999) and president of the Commission for Swiss Foreign Policy described above all his missions to Eastern Europe. As a member of the Council of Europe (1991-1999) he was confronted with several violent conflicts on the Balkans as well as in Chechnya. He broke the path for the admission of Russia into the Council of Europe. In the discussion he was asked about the military threats for Switzerland during the Cold War. The government's behavior in the conflict about the dormant accounts was sharply criticized.

10/2004 : The AfZ at ISI 2004
The Swiss Archives of Contemporary History presents at the International Symposium for Information Science (ISI) Xylix Online Archives, a project for an archival information retrieval system developed in cooperation with Xylix Software, Zurich.

6/23/2004 : Colloquium with Prof. Dr. Arnold Künzli
In his reminiscences Arnold Künzli began with his youth in Zagreb and Bern (1919-1938) and as a student in Zurich (1939-1945). followed by an overview on his engagment as a correspondent for the "National-Zeitung" (1946-1962) in Rome, London and Bonn. The colloquium focused furthermore on his comitments as free editor, as professor for political philosophy at the University of Basel (1964-1984) and on his political ideas for selfgovernment and democratic socialism.

4/2004: Startup of the virtual tour "Discover the Swiss Archives of Contemporary History" on the internet
Just in time to the 150 year-anniversary of the ETH Zurich the AfZ presents its core competencies and its thematical focus in virtual tour through the Archives on the web. The film has been produced in cooperation with the Network for Educational Technologies (NET) of the ETH Zurich and can be seen here in an english, german or french version.

3/17/2004: Colloquium with former Federal Councillor (Bundesrat) Dr. Otto Stich
The look back as Minister of Finance of Switzerland between 1984 and 1995 was devoted to the budget policy and the painful measures to stabilize the state's finances which had to be reorganised in a difficult political environment. His anti-cyclical conception was refused by a majority of the Swiss parliament whereas his proposals to a belt-tightening were not supported sufficiently by the rest of the government. 

11/26/2003: Colloquium with Pfr. Heinrich Rusterholz
In his reminiscences Heinrich Rusterholz outlined his engagment as minister and missionary for a modern church. The colloquium focused furthermore on his comitments for defusing political and social conflicts in Eastern Europe and South Africa as well as on his presidency of the Federation of Swiss Protestant Churches (1987-1998)

10/2003: In the series "Veröffentlichungen des Archivs für Zeitgeschichte" (Publications of the Archives of Contemporary History) appears the fourth volume: Kury Patrick: Über Fremede reden. Überfreumdungsdiskurs und Ausgrenzung in der Schweiz 1900-1945. (Talking about foreigners. Discourse on foreign infiltration and ostracism in Switzerland 1900-1945.) 7/9/2003: Colloquium with Dr. Pio G. Eggstein
The lookback on five decades of relations between Switzerland and South Africa was marked by the personal experiences of the speaker who had come to Cape Town as an assistant lecturer. Subsequently he came to represent the interests of several renowned Swiss firms - in the end as representative of the Credit Suisse. In the following discussion, led by Dr. Werner Vogt, various issues on the current situation in South Africa were taken up.

5/21/2003: Presentation on the completion of the VSJF project.
After six years of work the results of the project concerning the most important Jewish refugee archive of Switzerland were presented to the public.

3/19/2003: Colloquium with Dr. jur. Dr h.c. Rolf Bloch.
After a short lookback on his career as entrepreneur (Chocolats Camille Bloch SA) and as exponent of the private sector Dr. Rolf Bloch gave an overview on the dispute over the unclaimed assets, that he had experienced as president of the Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities (1992-2000). He judged the benefits of the Swiss Fund, which he directed from 1997 to 2002, as an important moral act in favor of the indigent victims of the holocaust / shoa.

12/18/2002: Colloquium with Prof. Dr. Werner Weber
The first part of the lookback (1946-1987) reflected the activities of Werner Weber as literary critic, NZZ chief literary editor, university professor and president of the board of directors of the Zurich theatre. The discussion which was conducted by Prof. Dr. Urs Bitterli resulted in interesting information among others on Emil Staiger and Max Frisch.

11/18/2002: Renovated reading room is open again
The reading room has a new timber ceiling and lighting and is again at the users' disposal.

11/16/2002: Swiss Archive Day at the AfZ (Archives of Contemporary History)
In the course of the second Swiss Archive Day the AfZ has presented itself to the interested public with a varied program. Around hundred visitors were informed about our activities, about modern techniques of archiving and retrieval (virtual archive) and visited the exhibition on some thematic issues.

11/6/2002: Colloquium with former Federal Councillor (Bundesrätin) Elisabeth Kopp
In the second part of the look back those developments came into focus, that finally led to the resignation of the chief of the Swiss Federal Department of Justice and Police (Eidgenössisches Justiz- und Polizeidepartement; EJPD). Mrs Kopp also pursued from a personal point of view the following years of social ostracism; in spite of an acquittal by the Federal Appeal Court, there has been no rehabilitation until this day.

9/15/2002: Renovation works at the AfZ
Since mid September 2002 the air conditioning, the ventilation shafts, the ceilings and the isolation in the attic storey at the Hirschengraben 62 are being restored. Due to the renovation going on, the reading room remains closed in between September 20th and October 11th. Up to mid December a certain amount of noise, generated by the works, is unavoidable.

6/19/2002: Colloquium with former member of the Swiss National Council (Nationalrat) Prof. Dr. Walther Hofer
In the second part of his look back at the times as Professor for contemporary history at the University of Berne (1960-1988) and as member of both the Swiss National Council and Council of Europe (1963/67-1979), the speaker provided above all many insights into his political activities in the Swiss and European context, as a politician of the BGB/SVP party specialized in foreign policy.

3/20/2002: Colloquium with former Government Councillor Prof. Dr. Hans Künzi
In his reminiscences the pioneer in the fields of Operational Research and director of the Department of Economics of the Canton Zurich (1970-1991) outlined his diverse commitments for the establishment of informatics at the universities of Zurich and for the sustained extension of the public traffic in the Zurich area.

3/6/2002 : Visit of the class 'Information and Documentation' of the vocational school Zurich (Dr. Peter Scheck)
On the 6th of March 2002 an educational event took place at the Archives of Contemporary History for the class 'Information and Documentation' of the vocational school Zurich. Aside from an overall view, a deepened insight into the work processes of description and information mediation in a modern archive were on the agenda.

2/26/2002: The Karl Schmid Prize awarded to former Federal Councillor (Bundesrat) Adolf Ogi
The Karl Schmid Foundation, whose office is at the Archives of Contemporary History, awards Adolf Ogi the Karl Schmid Prize 2002 "in recognition of his valuable services to the public". The presentation is open to the public and takes place on February 26th 2002 (Auditorium Maximum of the ETH Zurich, 6 p.m. to about 7.15 p.m.).

2/17/2002: Scientific conference of the Association for the History of the Jews in Switzerland at the AfZ
In collaboration with the Institute of Jewish Studies at the University of Basel the Archives of Contemporary History organize on February 17th 2002 a conference on the history of the Jews in Switzerland. Under the presentation of Prof. Dr. Jacques Picard and Dr. Gaby Knoch-Mund, central aspects of Jewish contemporary history are investigated in commented short papers by Swiss historians.

2/1/2002: The new AfZ website is switched on
Replacing the first AfZ website from 1997 brings, aside from a leaner design, more actualised informations to our visitors regarding ongoing AfZ projects as well as many improved search functions.

12/19/2001: Colloquium with Dr. h. c. Hans J. Bär
The well known private banker gave many insights in his lifelong activities from 1940 to 2001 in a talk with Dr. Eric L. Dreifuss, under the heading 'the wide streched arc - engaged in economy and culture'.

10/31/2001: Colloquium with former Federal Councillor (Bundesrätin) Elisabeth Kopp
In a first part Elisabeth Kopp looked back on her political activities as mayor of Zumikon, as a member of the Swiss National Council (Nationalrat) and on the election as first female Federal Councillor in 1984. From the outset she focussed on ecological matters. In the Swiss Federal Council she was dealing, inter alia, with asylum and foreign law and assistance in law enforcement.

5/16/2001: Colloquium with former ambassador Dr. Carlo Jagmetti
In a look back on his career in the service of Swiss diplomacy 1962-1997, he spoke predominantly about the issues regarding the relations of Switzerland to Europe and the conflict about the unclaimed assets that finally led to his resignation as Swiss ambassador in Washington.

4/9/2001: Termination of the microfilm project from the Joint Archive, New York
The AfZ received already in 1999 and 2000 as a gift 16 microfilms with the file numbers 922-1013 of the country record 'Switzerland' from the 'General Archives 1933-1944' of the Joint. With the handing over of the remaining 6 microfilms the record can now be viewed in full in Zurich, too. Of prime importance are the files on the Swiss refugee policy during and after the Second World War.

3/21/2001: Colloquium with former Federal Councillor (Bundesrat) Dr. Kurt Furgler
Following the look back of 1998, the second part was devoted to the years 1972-1986, when Kurt Furgler was head of the Federal Department of Justice and Police and of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs.

2/13/2001: Termination of the microfilm project on the captured enemy records (Beuteakten) from the Russian State Military Archive, Moscow
In the Russian State Military Archive, Moscow, most documents stored there have been captured 1945 by the Red Army in Germany or in the countries occupied by it. On the one hand, these records were stolen before by the Nazis in the occupied countries, on the other hand, it is archival material from the Nazi administration itself. It is the aim of the microfilm project in Moscow to make accessible those records among the 'captured enemy records', which prove to be of importance to the Swiss and Jewish contemporary history. As a result, 22 more microfilms with Russian
captured enemy records can now be viewed in the Archives of Contemporary History, where they are processed for further use.

2/12/2001: Dr. Warda Bleser-Bircher, granddaughter of the first president of the 'Cercle Suisse' in Cairo, bequeathes to the AfZ a legacy of Fr. 300.000.-, for the care of her personal papers, that contain notes and material on the Swiss colony in Egypt since the end of the 19th century.

9/5/2000: The AfZ receives a first legacy from former National Council Heinrich Schalcher.

9/1/2000: Shortly before his unexpected death Divisional Commander Gustav Däniker, who shaped in a substantial way the Swiss Security Policy for more than four decades, gave his complete records, making up 13 linear meters, to the Archives of Contemporary History. With this legacy an essential basis for the consolidation of the new main focus on Switzerland during the Cold War and its way to the present has been laid.

7/20/2000: The archive of the legendary 'mother of refugees' Dr. h.c. Gertrud Kurz (1890-1972), has been taken over; it testifies to the indefatigable engagement of a courageous woman for persecuted and underpriviliged people. The solidarity with Jewish refugees in the Second World War as well as the assistance of persecuted Algerians during the independence war are impressive examples of her extensive activities.

5/2000: In the series "Veröffentlichungen des Archivs für Zeitgeschichte" (Publications of the Archives of Contemporary History) the third volume has been published: Werner, Christian: Für Wirtschaft und Vaterland. Erneuerungsbewegungen und bürgerliche Interessengruppen in der Deutschschweiz 1928-1947. Zurich: Chronos edition. 2000. 440 p., Fr. 68.-.

4/2000: Acquisition of 90 microfilms from the archive of the ICRC (ACICR)
In April 2000 the Archives of Contemporary History got a further series of 90 microfilms from the Historical Archive of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ACICR). These are files on the 'Division d'assistance spéciale' (DAS) (Division of Special Assistance) of the ICRC dating from 1940 to 1963. Aside from documents on the general activities of this division, one finds in its microfilms material on aid activities, on the collaboration with other branches of the ICRC, lists of names as well as dossiers on numerous individual cases.

3/11/2000: Death of former permanent secretary of state Prof. Dr. Paul R. Jolles. With his personal papers, ranging over 35 linear meters, the AfZ receives sources of prime importance on the Swiss economic and foreign trade policy. The documents of the successful negotiation strategist go back to the Second World War and document his diverse commitments even after his resignation in 1984 as director of the Federal Office of Foreign Economy.

6/28/1999: The couple Simon and Hildegard Rothschild-Winiger establishes the "Simon and Hildegard Rothschild Foundation", which supports research and safeguarding of the Archives of Contemporary History in the context of the documentation centre Jewish Contemporary History. The initial capital of Fr. 500.000.- will be increased to Fr. 1.000.000.- in the year 2000.

6/24/1999: The AfZ present the new Archive manual to the public. The manual, which was elaborated in years of work, is not restricted to a formal description of the holdings, but offers in addition a wealth of information on the persons and institutions involved. (Das Archiv für Zeitgeschichte und seine Bestände.) Zurich: NZZ edition, 1999. 359 p., Fr. 40.-.

9/9/1998: The historical Archive of the Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities with a range of about 55 linear meters and composed of files dating from the beginning of the century up to 1985, has been taken over. Together with the JUNA archives, the former Press and Documentation Centre of the Jewish communities, which was already included in 1993, it forms a core record for research on the political history of the Jews in Switzerland.

5/1998: In the series "Veröffentlichungen des Archivs für Zeitgeschichte" (Publications of the Archives of Contemporary History) the second volume has been issued: Huser Bugmann, Karin: Schtetl an der Sihl. Einwanderung, Leben und Alltag der Ostjuden in Zürich 1889-1939. Zurich: Chronos edition. 1998. 303 p., Fr. 48.-.

4/17/1998: The historical archive of the liberal-conservative "Aktionsgemeinschaft Nationaler Wiederaufbau", better known as "Redressement National" ("Vereinigung für Freiheit, Föderalismus und Recht") has been taken over; it consists of about 220 archive boxes, which are thus being saved from impending destruction. The 'Aktionsgemeinschaft' was founded in 1936 as a combat organization against nationalization and centralization; the files, ranging over constitutional, financial, traffic and trade policy, cover the time from its founding to the eighties.

11/7/1997 - 2/5 1998: Exhibition "Fernsicht. Walter Bosshard - ein Pionier des modernen Photojournalismus" (Clear view. Walter Bosshard - a pioneer of modern photo journalism) in the Kunsthaus (Art Museum) Zurich. An exhibition and edition of a large monography (Benteli edition, Berne) are the result of a common project of the AfZ and the Swiss Foundation for Photography on the refurbishing of Walter Bosshard's estate.

8/18/19/1997: The extensive Archive of the Swiss Union of Jewish Welfare Organizations has been taken over. After the implementation the refugee archive will be accessible since October 1997 to the Independent Expert Commission as well as to the enquiries of refugees and their relatives. In the context of a project lasting several years, the whole record is made available for further use.

6/5/1997: Official inauguration of the "House of History" of the ETH Zurich. On this occasion the Institute of History and the AfZ carried out a media conference on their respective activities, which met with a positive and widespread response.

4/16/1997: The Documentation archive of the 'Gesellschaft zur Förderung der schweizerischen Wirtschaft' (1943-1974) has been taken over.

3/20/1997: Start of the series "Veröffentlichungen des Archivs für Zeitgeschichte" (Publications of the Archives of Contemporary History) with the volume: Gast, Uriel: Von der Kontrolle zur Abwehr. Die eidgenössische Fremdenpolizei im Spannungsfeld von Politik und Wirtschaft 1915-1933. (Zurich: Chronos edition. 1997. 438 p., CHF 58.-.)

3/13/1997: The Church Council of the Evangelical-Reformed Church of the Canton Zurich holds a media conference at the AfZ. The financial support of the project for the development of the refugee files of the Swiss Union of Jewish Welfare Organizations by the AfZ has been announced.
